Lela
Wake up.
I rolled over and moaned, then remembered she couldnât hear me. Ughhh
Mae got quite a bit sharper. Lela, wake up now!
I donât wanna.
Come outside. Code White.
What? What in the world was code white?
Ugh, this had better be important. I rolled out of bed with a moan and lots of internal complaining. The sun wasnât even completely up yet and the floor was cold on my bare feet.
I was not pleased.
I shuffled as quickly as I could down the hall, through the living room, and out the front door. "Crap." I stubbed my big toe on the threshold and hopped on my unhurt foot the rest of the way to the stairs. Then I froze. Code White was right.
Snow. Snow everywhere. There had to be at least two feet of snow on the ground, and not just the ground. Our cars, the roof, the trailer, everything was covered in a thick, white blanket of snow.
"The wicked witch spirit strikes again," Mae said with a slight smile on her face, but she was stressed. "Any ideas?"
I grabbed my rain boots from the living room closet and shoved my throbbing foot in as I hopped back out the door. "First, I think we should walk around and make sure she didnât leave anything of interest."
"Good call." Mae headed toward the backyard, and I stayed in the front.
We met on the opposite side of the house. âAnything?â she asked.
I half-smiled, half-grimaced. âSnow.â
"Right," Mae said with a snort. "We need to get rid of this mess before someone sees it. Any suggestions?"
"Why donât you try flushing it with your fluid superpowers?â I shrugged and looked around. âI mean, itâs still water, technically, isnât it?â
âGood point.â Mae raised her hands. "You might want to go stand on the porch.â She manifested gallons upon gallons of water to melt and flush away the snow. As it washed away, the snow disappeared with it, leaving wet grass and way too much mud.
"Itâs working," I yelled. "Keep going."
The snow quickly faded away with the water, and wham-bam, our yard was back to normal. Wet and muddy but normal.
"What an alarm clock. I almost prefer being woken by a skunk on my face."
Mae snorted again. âI think snow is better. Come on. Coffee. Food.â We headed inside for sustenance, although I didnât think either of us needed the caffeine after that adrenaline rush.
"Iâm thinking French toast," Mae suggested. âWe deserve it after the morning weâve had."
"Yes, Iâm in." I grabbed the eggs and the vanilla while Mae cut a chunk of butter into the pan and opened the bread. Weâd long ago established a routine for making French toast, and we were pretty darn good at it.
I cracked the eggs into the mixing bowl and whisked them. "I have a lot to do today to prepare for Berthaâs party. I know I said Iâd take care of the decorations, but Iâm worried that I wonât be able to get it all done."
"Whatever you come up with will be perfect. Bertha will love it no matter what the decorations look like.
